The Department of Zoology, Ecology & Plant Science has eighteen full-time academic staff, one part-time academic staff member, two Emeritus Professors, and twelve technical staff all contributing to a teaching and research environment. The Department has 20 postdoctoral researchers and 48 PhD students. Within the Department, the Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Centre aims to support, stimulate and promote the development of
Aquaculture in all its forms. Emphasis is placed on applied aspects of fisheries and aquaculture, including fish and shellfish diseases. Research in shellfish pathology has been undertaken since the mid 1980s with emphasis on protozoan, bacterial and viral diseases of bivalve molluscs. The laboratory has strong links with industry and research partners both nationally and internationally.
