Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer

The goals of Ifremer are to promote new means of developing marine bivalve aquaculture and limiting the impact and the spread of diseases affecting species of commercial interest through the development of rapid and specific diagnostic tools, in-depth knowledge of the infectious processes and derivation of resistant animals.Ifremer is internationally recognised for its work in pathology, immunology and genetics of marine bivalves.

In pathology, many studies are carried out on protozoan, bacterial and viral diseases affecting molluscs. The work of Ifremer is multidisciplinary in nature and combines virology, microbiology, molecular biology, pathology and parasitology, histology and epidemiology in the study of diseases. Ifremer’s laboratories are well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for research.

Furthermore the Genetics and Pathology Laboratory (Ifremer - La Tremblade) has a key statutory role under France legislation and EU Directives in the prevention and control of disease supported by laboratory based diagnostic services. This Laboratory is the EU reference laboratory for mollusc diseases (2006/88/EU) and is the OIE (Office International des Epizooties) reference laboratory for bonamiosis and marteiliosis. The Laboratory is the National Laboratory for bivalve mollusc diseases.
